For just the second time in school history and the first time since 2011, the Eastern Musketeers football team knocked off their county rival, the West Washington Senators. A great and supportive crowd was on hand to support the Musketeers. It was a fantastic start to the TJ Newton era of Eastern football as the Musketeers controlled the ball the entire night. The Musketeers ran 72 plays to the Senators 31 en route to 335 yards of offense. Eastern had 264 yards rushing and 71 via the pass. In addition, the Musketeers had some clutch 3rd and 4th down conversions to keep drives alive. They converted 50% of their 3rd down conversions (7 out of 14) and 60% of 4th downs conversions (3 out of 5). The Musketeers also had two big fumble recoveries, one late in the game by senior Aidan MIller at mid-field. In addition, the team played strong defense all night while doing a solid job of tackling and keeping the Senator's run game under control. The Musketeers had the ball for most of the first quarter and eventually broke through to open up scoring in the 2nd quarter as senior quarterback, Cody Banet found the end zone on a one a 2 yd sweep play before also kicking the extra point to put the Musketeers up 7-0. That score held up giving the Musketeers the advantage going into halftime. In the 3rd quarter, the Musketeers received the kick-off and marched down field before senior running back, Martin Lewen found the end zone on an exciting 25 yard run. After missing the extra point, the Musketeers were up 13-0. In the fourth quarter, after a nifty 31 yard pass play from Banet to Lewen got the Musketeers inside the 5, senior running back Brayden Jones found the end zone on a 7 yd run that was capitalized by a Lewen 2 pt conversion to put the Musketeers up 21-0. The Senators would then respond with a 69 yard pass for a TD before failing on their own 2 pt conversion making the score 21-6, which would end up being the final score. The Musketeers dominated the ground game behind the excellent work of the offensive line and Brayden Jones, who had 141 yards on 20 carries. Kaleb Bongibault had 7 carries for 67 yards, while Martin Lewen had 7 carries for 44 yards and Christian Reschar had 5 for 21 yards. From the air, Cody Banet threw for 71 yards on 5 of 8 passing. From a receiving standpoint, Lewen had 31 yards on 1 reception, Eli Houglin had 2 receptions for 31 yards and Jones had 2 receptions for 9 yards. Landon Rose and Aidan Miller both had big fumble recoveries while Reschar forced a fumble. Overall, the defensive line held strong and did a great job of being disciplined throughout the night. The Musketeers have their home opener next Friday against the visiting Tell City Marksmen at 7:30 pm. The night will also be Youth Football Night where all youth football players will get in free with a paid adult and for wearing their jersey. Youth teams will be recognized at halftime of the game.
