The Musketeer baseball team had an amazing opportunity to play in the Hardball Classic hosted by Southridge High School. Southridge is fortunate to host all of their home games at the historic League Stadium, home of the semi-pro, Dubois County Bombers. In addition, League Stadium is also the fictional home of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League team known as the Rockford Peaches from the 1992 film, A League of Their Own. These lovely ladies were managed by the fiery, Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks). The following All Star cast filmed the movie here, Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Rosie O'Donnell, Madonna, Tea Leoni, Jon Lovitz and Bill Pullman. In addition, the stadium has also had its fair share of talented baseball players grace the diamond since 1894, when the stadium was originally built. Legends such as Satchel Paige and Hall of Famer Scott Rolen, who played for neighboring Jasper before enjoying a tremendous MLB career with the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds competed at League Stadium. In addition, MLB players Buddy Blemker (A's), Bob Coleman (Pirates), Sean Manaea (currently with Mets), Colson Montgomery (currently with White Sox), and Steve Cishek (Marlins/Cubs) among numerous others have played at League Stadium. At the Hardball Classic, the Musketeers began the day against the host school's veteran Southridge Raider team. The M's found themselves up 5-3 before faltering in late innings to lose 10-5. Freshmen Reas Sater (1-3, 1 run and 1 RBI), Carter Smith (2-3 with a walk) Alton Swartz (1-2, 2 RBI) Reese Lindley (1 RBI) along with sophomore Johnny Anderson (Walk, run) and juniors Gavin Odum (1 hit, 1 RBI) and Trenton Friedmeyer (1 run, 1 stolen base) accounted for the offense in the loss. In game two, the Musketeers avenged their earlier season Southern Athletic Conference loss to the South Central Rebels, winning 5-3. The Musketeers only mustered 2 hits delivered by Sater and Anderson. Smith had a pair of walks, 1 stolen base and 2 runs scored. Sater also scored a pair while Anderson crossed the plate once himself. On the pitching side, Lindley had a terrific outing going 4 innings while surrendering 6 hits and 2 unearned runs to go with 7 strikeouts. Smith came on to earn the win in relief, going 3 innings while surrendering 3 hits, 1 unearned run and striking out 3 Rebels. After Monday's loss to Corydon Central, the Musketeers record sits at 6-9 overall and 2-1 in the SAC. The Musketeers are still in the hunt for at least a share of the SAC title with several key conference games coming up next week, before the state tournament begins at the end of May. They will be at home next Wednesday and Thursday, hosting Crothersville and Clarksville, before traveling to Borden on Friday. They will wrap up conference play, the following week at New Washington. On May 30th, the Musketeers will travel to Mitchell to play the host Bluejackets in the semi-finals of the sectional. A win advances them to the sectional championship on June 2nd.
